Pada suatu masa, di Kerajaan Pasir Batang, ada seorang Raja harus memilih penggantinya. Raja memiliki dua Putri, yaitu Putri Purbararang dan Putri Purbasari. Putri Purbasari terpilih sebagai pengganti karena sifatnya yang lembut. Namun, dia diusir ke hutan dan bertemu dengan seekor lutung buruk rupa. Sebenarnya, Lutung yang tersesat (Lutung Kasarung) adalah seorang Pangeran dari Kerajaan Cupu Mandala di kahyangan yang berubah menjadi seekor lutung ketika turun ke bumi. Lutung dan Purbasari berjuang bersama-sama dengan kesabaran, sehingga mendapatkan kembali Kerajaan Pasir Batang. Lutung berubah menjadi pangeran dan menikahi Putri Purbasari. Mereka memerintah Kerajaan Pasir Batang dan Kerajaan Cupu Mandala bersama-sama.
